How to create a QR code

Choose your content type

Select URL, Text, or WiFi from the tabs. URL is best for websites and social profiles. Text works for phone numbers and addresses. WiFi lets guests connect by scanning - no typing required. In a hurry? Use the quick-start dropdown above the generator, or click "Use this template" on any card in Where people use QR codes, and the tab, label, size, and error correction are all set for you.

Customise the appearance

Set the size, foreground and background colour, and error correction level. For print, use at least 300 px and High error correction. For digital use, Medium is fine.

Add a text label or logo (optional)

Type a label like "Scan to visit our menu". Pick where it sits - above, below, to the side, or inside the code - then set the font, size, and colour. You can also upload your own logo to place in the centre of the code; error correction is automatically raised so it still scans reliably. Everything is combined into one image.

Generate and download

Test before you print

Always scan your QR code with at least two different phones before printing. Once printed, a static QR code cannot be changed.

How to scan a QR code

You do not need a special app. Both iPhone and Android can scan QR codes using the built-in camera.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add text to my QR code? +
Yes - that is the main feature of this tool. Type a label into the Text Label section, pick its position (above, below, left, right, or inside the image), then choose the font, size, and colour. The QR code and your text are composited into a single image, so when you download it, everything is part of the same file.
Can I add my own logo to a QR code? +
Yes. Click the logo upload area, choose an image file, and it's placed in the centre of the QR code at an adjustable size. Error correction is automatically switched to High whenever a logo is used, so the code stays scannable even with part of the pattern covered. For best results, keep the logo simple and no larger than about 25–30% of the code's width.
What size should I choose? +
For screen use - websites, emails, presentations - 200–300 px is fine. For print, use 300 px or higher. A 300 px QR code printed at 1 inch is 300 DPI, which is sharp. For large-format printing like posters, choose 400–500 px.
What does error correction do? +
Error correction lets a QR code be scanned even when part of it is damaged or covered. Higher levels (Q, H) make the code more resilient but denser. Medium (15%) is the best general-purpose setting. Use High (30%) for print materials that will wear.
Is my data sent to a server? +
Your QR content - the URL, text, or WiFi password you enter - is processed locally in your browser and is not sent to our servers for QR generation. QR generation, text compositing, and image rendering all happen on your device. Separately, and unrelated to QR generation, this site records an anonymous, aggregate count of visits and QR codes generated (shown on the homepage, with no IP address, cookie, or account attached) and stores reviews you choose to submit; see our Privacy Policy for what standard server logs and cookies capture.
Will my QR code expire, or ask me to pay later? +
No, and it can't. Codes generated here are static: there's no account, no trial, and no subscription, so there's no server on our end that could later charge you or switch a code off. The destination is written directly into the QR code image the moment you download it. This is different from "free" dynamic QR services that route scans through their own servers - those can deactivate codes once a trial ends or a subscription lapses. If a QR generator asks for a credit card up front, stamps a watermark on the code, or caps how many times it can be scanned, that's the sign of a managed/dynamic service, not a static one like this.
How do I scan a QR code on my phone? +
On iPhone (iOS 11+), open the Camera app, point it at the QR code, and tap the banner that appears. On Android, open the Camera app or Google Lens and tap the link or notification. No third-party app is needed on modern devices.
Why won't my QR code scan? +
The most common causes are: the code is too small (print at least 2 cm × 2 cm), there is not enough contrast between colours, the quiet zone (white border) has been cropped, or the image is blurry. Try increasing the size and error correction level, then reprint on matte paper.
Can I change where a QR code points after printing? +
No - codes generated here are static. The destination URL is encoded directly into the image. Once printed it cannot be redirected. If you need to update the destination later, you need a dynamic QR code service, which uses a redirect URL you can change through a dashboard.
How many characters can a QR code hold? +
At Medium error correction, a QR code can store up to roughly 2,900 numeric characters, 1,800 alphanumeric characters, or 1,200 bytes of text. Most URLs are well within these limits. Longer data produces a denser code that can be harder to scan.
Are QR codes secure? +
QR codes themselves are neutral - they just encode data. The risk is that a malicious actor could replace a legitimate code with one pointing to a phishing site. Always check the URL preview your phone shows before tapping, and make sure your destination uses HTTPS.
How long do QR codes last? +
A static QR code itself never expires - the data is encoded in the image and remains valid forever. What can expire is the destination: if you delete the webpage the code points to, the code scans but leads to a 404 error.
How do I add a QR code to a flyer or business card? +
Generate your QR code here and download it as a PNG. Then place it in your design software - Canva, Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Word, or any image editor. Print it at least 2 cm × 2 cm with a clear white border. Leave at least 4–5 mm of quiet zone on all sides.

Key terms explained

QR code
Quick Response code. A two-dimensional barcode that stores data as a grid of black and white squares. Smartphones read them using their camera.
Static QR code
A code whose destination is encoded directly into the image. It cannot be changed after creation. All codes generated here are static.
Dynamic QR code
A code that points to a redirect URL, letting you change the final destination at any time through a dashboard. Requires a paid third-party service.
Error correction
A built-in mechanism that lets a QR code be read even when part of it is damaged or covered. Levels are L (7%), M (15%), Q (25%), and H (30%).
Quiet zone
The blank white border that must surround a QR code on all sides. Without it, scanners cannot detect where the code begins and ends.
Module
Each individual square in a QR code pattern. A larger QR code has more modules, allowing it to store more data or higher error correction.
Finder pattern
The three square symbols in the corners of every QR code. They let the scanner determine the orientation and size of the code regardless of angle.
Data capacity
The maximum amount of information a QR code can store. At Medium correction, up to approximately 1,800 alphanumeric characters.
